Culture and Sport Aberdeenshire sub committee external members

Do want to influence the positive delivery of Aberdeenshire Council’s bold and ambitious ten year Culture and Sport Strategies?

Aberdeenshire Council has agreed to form a Sport and Physical Activity and Culture Business Unit to drive forward and deliver its strategic ambitions.  The development of a business unit is a great opportunity to continue to develop high quality services, increase community involvement in our services and harness local expertise. This new model will also aim to deliver betterment to the Council through an entrepreneurial approach to service delivery.

The sub-committee will build on the excellent work of the staff across Aberdeenshire who currently deliver well used and valued services including:

• Libraries and Information Services through 37 libraries and 4 mobile libraries
• Museums and Macduff Marine Aquarium
• Arts Development
• Sport and physical activity programmes and facilities with over 1.5 million visitors to our facilities in 16/17
• Sports Development
• Active Schools
• 13 Town Halls

Our strategies have prioritised health and well being, diversity and developing our communities. The business unit sub-committee will have a key role in making the best use of our resources to ensure that all who wish to participate in our service can, no matter their location or circumstances.

We are looking to recruit four individuals who can bring passion and skills to the formative years of the business unit.

The sub-committee will be established and will report to the Communities Committees. The sub-committee will have eight members with four being Aberdeenshire Council Elected Members and four independent external members.

It is anticipated that the sub-committee will first meet in July 2018 and the business unit commence December 2018.

External members will be recruited for up to three years and the sub-committee will meet up to eight times per year.

Candidates should be able to evidence several of the following:

• Leadership in a customer focussed environment
• Delivering health and wellbeing outcomes
• Data/intelligence – led service / business planning
• Marketing and publicity
• Commercial and retail acumen
• Networking skills
• Event management
• Skills in securing grant and project fundraising

• Manage the services, assets and employees in accordance with Aberdeenshire Council policy, good business practice, legislative requirements and in line with the sub-committee terms of reference to ensure  strong governance, public accountability and public benefit
• Ensure the services contribute to the delivery of the Culture and Sport strategies of Aberdeenshire Council
Yoga• Deliver best value for every pound invested in the service; including generating investment opportunities for the development and improvement of cultural, leisure and community services
• Promote the positive benefits of cultural and sport services in terms of health and well-being, learning, area promotion, creativity and competitive/creative excellence
• Promote participation in activities at all levels and for all sections of the community to enable residents to fulfil their potential in their chosen area of activity
• Ensure services are delivered in such a way as to encourage participation of all sections of the community including protected groups and meet and ideally exceed all appropriate access legislation
• Develop and nurture robust and productive partnerships with local clubs, community groups, voluntary organisations, the NHS, national bodies and customer groups
• Ensure the services’ listen to their users and respond to their views positively
• Value and develop staff and promote a culture of empowerment
• Offer a range of non-specialist community venues from which to deliver activities and resources which support the delivery of cultural and sport activities as well as generic community activities
• Support schools and young people in both delivering the curriculum and developing school and community club/organisation links.
