What is a Modern Apprenticeship in ICT?

Modern Apprenticeships are designed to help you learn whilst working. You’ll gain hands-on experience with your employer and work towards a qualification all while getting paid.  During your apprenticeship, you will receive full training from experienced staff to enable you to complete the day to day activities required in your role.  This work-based learning is aligned with set criteria allowing you to achieve an SCQF Level 7 (also known as SVQ Level 3) in IT Professional.

A Day in the Life

Your main responsibility as a Modern Apprentice within ICT is delivering customer focused support across the council. As you may often be the first point of contact for calls and requests, you will resolve technical problems and help customers with their queries. While supporting your team in the updating and development of applications you will gain the unique experience of how an ICT team runs and the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make the digital side of an organisation run. Studying for your SVQ is completed and assessed as you work, there is no day release to college or exams required.

“The spectrum of learning available to you is much more broad than you might expect through school or college. I’ve learned so much from the people I’m working with and have been able to access so much more knowledge, training and experience than I would have done at college.” – Mason

What happens next?

The Modern Apprenticeship in ICT is a fixed term role.  While you are not guaranteed a job at the end of your apprenticeship with the Council, most apprentices who complete their apprenticeship continue into further employment with us.  The table below will give you an idea of the next steps into a career in ICT following completion of the Modern Apprenticeship.

How do I become a Modern Apprentice in ICT?
