Rock Challenge

rock-challenge-2015Rock challenge has been running at Peterhead Academy since 2001. Over the years we have won many of our heats and competed in countless finals and have been rewarded as we are now a Premier team and automatically qualify for the Northern Premier Finals in Grimsby each year. We have competed at two National finals, coming third at the last National Final, which is a massive achievement. Our team is made up of around 80 dancers, 20 student stage crew and a team of dedicated adult volunteers who, with the help of the students, construct the full size set and incredible costumes. We have great community support with many parents driving down to Grimsby to support us at the final as well as the people of Peterhead supporting our fundraising events. We have also been awarded the Pride of Buchan award twice by the Buchan Area Committee of Aberdeenshire Council.

Rock Challenge is a performing arts event which aims to promote the idea performing on stage can produce a natural drug-free high. Teams from across the UK compete at regional heats at professional theatres with the winners being invited to the Northern or Southern Finals. Every 3 years a National final is held in Milton Keys with the top teams across the country being invited to compete.

To compete teams choreograph an 8-minute dance and drama performance on a theme of their choosing. Elaborate costumes and set are prepared, and full hair styling, makeup and even body paint are applied. A lot of work goes into each performance and the students take great pride in their work.

Rock Challenge promotes not only an anti-drug and alcohol ethos but also encourages teamwork and positive relationships between students and staff. Student’s health & wellbeing is improved as well as their attendance to school. Many of our students have gone on to study the creative arts, both on stage and behind the scenes.
