With a population of over 262,000 and collections from over 116,000 properties and 4000 commercial customers our Waste Management unit has a pretty big job on its hands. At present we have a recycling rate of around 45{131097797809090a64b17b5654a4c7a54525319a14aa89a10ac5f9a95a15126b} and send around 80,000 tonnes of household residual waste to landfill and the Council is committed to changing our relationship with waste, supporting the aspirations of the Circular Economy by treating waste as a resource.

We have work to do!

We are also one of three council partners behind the Ness Energy Project, which is considering the potential to build a state of the art Energy from Waste plant in the North East. In any of these three roles you will have an active part to play as this exciting £180m project develops.
