Civil Engineering

 

A Career in civil engineering with Aberdeenshire Council offers a unique opportunity to join our organisation as a school leaver, college leaver or qualified Engineer and progress through both academic or work based routes.  You will gain the valuable experience and skills required to be an experienced professional, in a wide range of civil engineering functions.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Service provide seven fundamental engineering functions:

  • Bridges
  • Roads
  • Harbours
  • Coastal Protection
  • Flood Management
  • Roads & Winter Maintenance
  • Traffic Engineering

Engineer Roles

There are three primary engineering roles within these functions:

Engineer: Whether you are a newly qualified Civil Engineer (BSc Hons or equivalent) looking for the hands on experience to take your career to the next level, or an experienced Engineer qualified in a further engineering discipline looking to apply your transferable skills in a new role.  A career as an Engineer with Aberdeenshire Council provides a huge variety of project experience ensuring the best design, management and improvement of the local infrastructure for our community.  We also offer the opportunity to enhance your career and salary by progressing through our industry recognised Civil Engineering Training Scheme (Grade I – K as below)

Technician (Civil Engineering)/Engineer: Depending on qualifications gained or experience to date, you can join us as a Technician if you hold the HNC/D in Civil Engineering or equivalent, and we will give you the valuable training to allow you to work toward the BSc Degree in Civil Engineering while you work.  This then provides a pathway to progress your career to the role of Engineer through our Civil Engineering Training Scheme.  If you already hold the BSc Degree in Civil Engineering you can join us as an Engineer (Grade H as below) and gain the experience to progress further through our Training Scheme

Trainee Technician (Civil Engineering): If you are leaving school or looking for a career change, the role of Trainee Technician is the perfect way to get hands on training and experience to start your career as a Civil Engineer.  Working alongside experienced engineering professionals on a variety of local improvement projects you will gain skills in small project design, site surveying and data collection for improvement works and the supervision of minor and major works by contractors to ensure compliance.  While progressing your career through our industry recognised Civil Engineering Training Scheme there is also the opportunity to complete the HNC/D Civil Engineering as you work through block/day release at college.  Our training scheme provides the unique pathway to progress your career to the role of Technician (Civil Engineer) and then further as an Engineer

Career Grade Scheme

Aberdeenshire Council’s career grade scheme for Civil Engineers allows individuals to develop and progress through the established pay grades as they meet specific requirements set out in each stage of the scheme.

The Civil Engineering Training Scheme (CETS) is approved by the Institute of Civil Engineers and seeks to allow staff to advance through existing internal grades, based on clear achievements and levels of competencies based around internal assessments.  Upon meeting these CETS essential objectives at each stage an employee can advance to the higher paid grade.

Salary placement for new employees is dependent on the level of qualification held or relevant experience.

Locations

Location of base can be flexible at various offices across Aberdeenshire depending on candidate home location/travel needs.  There is also a degree of remote working.

Base locations include – Banff, Strichen, Ellon, Inverurie, Alford, Stonehaven and Banchory.
