Supporting our Employees Across the EU Settlement Scheme Grace Period

As we progress through 2021, I am conscious many in our workforce may be thinking of applying to the EU Settlement Scheme, ahead of the deadline on 30th June.

This will be a challenging time for many, with individuals anxious about the application process and perhaps even feeling somewhat alienated from colleagues and their community.

I therefore wanted to take this opportunity to provide assurance that Aberdeenshire Council values every individual within its workforce and recognises the importance of the contributions made by all. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and supportive employer and will continue to welcome staff from across the EU and further afield.

We encourage line managers and colleagues to support their fellow workers through this time.  However, it is understood that some may find more comfort speaking to an external party.

I want to highlight Aberdeenshire Council’s Employee Assistance Programme, Time for Talking, that can be contacted on 0800 9703980.

Further signposting to agencies that can provide support and guidance on the EU Settlement Scheme application can be found below on this web page, created for Aberdeenshire Council employees.

We would remind employees to be respectful of others in the workplace and would also highlight our Anti-Bullying and Harassment Guidance.  This outlines what you can do if you experience or witness bullying and harassment at work and in any work-related setting, including harassment relating to nationality and ethnic origin.  I want to emphasise the guidance is not a reference only for those who feel they are themselves being victimised. Each of us have a responsibility to challenge or report unacceptable behaviour we see.  The diversity of our workforce is greatly valued, and we hope all our affected employees feel supported across this period of transition.  If you have feedback you would like to provide at this time, please email recruitmentadvice@aberdeenshire.gov.uk – we would be happy to hear from you.

The application deadline for EU Settlement Scheme is 30th June 2021

We have added signposting information which you may find useful to navigate through the process:

  • You may find the OISC (Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner) Adviser Finder useful. This can be used to find a local immigration adviser and identify which would provide initial advice for free.

Information and updates that will be provided on this page will not advocate any particular course of action. Until the government announces its future intentions, it is unclear whether employees working and residing in the UK on the basis of EU law will benefit by following any particular course of action. Independent immigration advice can be sought if you feel it is necessary.
