Vi Wright – 30 Years in Home Care
I’ve worked in Home Care in its various forms for a long time, so I must enjoy it! For me the service user is always at the centre of everything and although over the years I have faced challenges, it’s generally been a pleasure!
I started with Aberdeenshire Council over 30 years ago as a Home Help working part time hours that fit around my family life. In those days the role was very different to what it is today. Home Helps did the shopping and domestic tasks around the home, while the Nurses undertook all the personal care and medicine management elements. Gradually over the years the role has changed and evolved to the role it is today.
It’s a very rewarding job. The service users are individuals and I treat them as such; I get great job satisfaction seeing the clients re-develop their skills and confidence and knowing that I supported and enabled them to get there! It’s a privilege to work with service users receiving palliative care and know that I am assisting them to fulfil their end of life wishes.
Patience and compassion are a must in the Home Carer role; and you need to be a flexible and adaptable individual who can build trusting relationships quickly.
I really enjoy what I do and believe that working in Home Care I am making a difference.
